FOB and CIF are commonly requested in vehicle trade, but a three-letter term is not a complete quotation. Buyers should confirm the named port, shipping method, included work, document list and the point where responsibility changes.

What an FOB quotation helps you compare

An FOB quotation is useful when the buyer controls ocean freight or wants to compare freight separately. It should name the port of loading and state which China-side services are included, such as inland movement, export declaration, terminal handling and loading coordination. Ask what is excluded instead of assuming every local charge is covered.

What CIF adds

A CIF quotation generally includes cost, insurance and freight to a named destination port. It does not normally mean customs-cleared delivery to the buyer's address. Destination terminal charges, duty, tax, brokerage, storage and local transport may remain the buyer's responsibility. Confirm the insurance scope and claim process rather than treating insurance as a simple checkbox.

Compare like with like

Two CIF prices may use different routes, sailing schedules, insurance levels or vehicle details. Confirm the exact VIN or unit, model year, condition, port, currency, validity period and estimated shipping window. For RoRo and container options, ask how loading, securing and evidence will be handled.

Choose according to your capability

Experienced importers with a freight partner may prefer FOB control. Buyers who need the exporter to arrange ocean freight may prefer CIF clarity. Huisheng can discuss both directions and provide an itemized quotation based on destination, quantity and vehicle type.

Frequently asked questions

Does CIF include import duty?

Usually no. CIF generally covers cost, insurance and freight to the named destination port, while import clearance and destination charges remain separate unless explicitly agreed.

Which is cheaper, FOB or CIF?

The headline FOB figure is lower because freight and insurance are separate. The better choice depends on the complete cost and who can manage shipping effectively.
